Frost patterns on your roof tell a story

The areas where frost is absent indicate warmth coming up from the heated areas of the home into the attic. (I’m not talking about so-called “finished attics”, but truly uninhabited, unheated spaces.) Typically, the solution revolves around Air Sealing.

Most of these roofs show isolated areas where heat is reaching the roof deck. In the wide photo at the bottom, it’s the entire attic that is filling up with heated air.

Oven Safety for Holiday Baking

Many folks use their ovens sparingly except at holiday time. Be warned that gas ovens are a source of carbon monoxide when a) the burners are dirty and b) the amount of gas to oxygen is not adjusted correctly. Make sure you have a carbon monoxide detector in your kitchen, and open windows or run the range hood when baking.

SunSpec offers a CO test for the oven only for just $30 during the holiday season. We will tell you if your oven is emitting CO levels that exceed BPI standards, and what to do about it.

For a test that includes gas oven, water heater, and heating system, (one each) the charge is $65.

Symptoms of CO poisoning include headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea, vomiting, chest pain, and confusion. High levels of CO inhalation can cause loss of consciousness and death. See the Center for Disease Control website for more information on the hazards of CO:

Be safe this holiday season!

PSC Rulings 11/11/2013

For those interested in Solar Electric systems… Last week’s Wisconsin Public Service Commission’s rulings preserve net metering at 20kW maximum system size, and annual true-up.

We in the industry would have liked to see the max size boosted to 100 kW, but are pleased that they didn’t change to monthly true-up, where any overproduction would have to be credited at “avoided cost”.
